Google has now added an ability to Gmail that will allow the service to automatically recognise addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses in mail and convert them into hyperlinks – a feature that is present in most other email clients. This will now be available on Gmail and Inbox by Gmail for iOS, Android, and Web for all users within the next three days.

“Gmail users often exchange information like addresses and phone numbers with each other to set up meetings, introduce colleagues and plan events. Precious time can be lost by having to copy and paste this information from an email into other apps and websites, so we wanted to provide a better way to perform these tasks that also saves time,” reads the G Suite blog post.

The Internet search giant has packed a number of smart features into Gmail in the past like Smart Reply for iOS and Android, so it is a little surprising that it is only now adding interactive hyperlinking to its mail service, but a part of the reason behind this delay could be Apple’s patent on it that expired last year.

Google explains that address links will open to Google Maps, email address links will open up a new compose window on your default email client, and clicking on a phone number will start a call using your default phone app.

These hyperlinks aim to make it easier for users to take quick actions while browsing through mail. Notably, phone number linking has been available for Android and iOS via their respective operating systems functionality, but the rest of the features are new to Gmail.

India’s second largest operator Vodafone Wednesday expressed dismay at the telecom regulator’s decision to cut mobile call connect charges to six paise per minute, and termed the move as a “retrograde” measure.

“This is yet another retrograde regulatory measure that, unless mitigated, will have serious consequences for investment in rural coverage, undermining the government’s vision of Digital India,” Vodafone said in a statement.

Slamming the latest decision of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Vodafone said the Indian telecom industry was already experiencing the “greatest period of financial stress in its history”.

“We are disappointed with this decision and are now considering our options in response to it,” the company said but did not specify its options.

Vodafone’s comments come in response to telecom regulator on Tuesday announcing cut in the mobile call connection charges to six paise a minute, and a complete phasing out of these rates from January 1, 2020, a move that will benefit newcomer Reliance Jio and deal a blow to the incumbent players.

Mobile companies currently charge 14 paise a minute for allowing a domestic call from a rival operator to terminate on their network. This charge, called Interconnection Usage Charges or IUC, will be brought down to six paise per minute from October 1, 2017, TRAI has said.

Earlier Tuesday, cellular industry association COAI termed the move “disastrous”, and said that most of its members will take legal recourse on the issue, to protect their financial interests.

Uber Technologies Inc, which is the subject of a federal probe into whether it broke bribery laws, has started a review of its Asia operations and notified US officials about payments made by staff in Indonesia, Bloomberg reported, citing people with knowledge of the matter.

A source familiar with the matter told Reuters that the Bloomberg report was accurate.

Uber said in August it was cooperating with a preliminary investigation led by the US Department of Justice into whether company managers violated US laws against bribery of foreign officials, specifically the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Uber hired law firm O’Melveny & Myers LLP to investigate how it obtained the medical records of an Indian woman who was raped by an Uber driver in 2014, Reuters reported in June.

O’Melveny & Myers is now examining records of foreign payments and interviewing employees, raising questions about why some potentially problematic business dealings were not disclosed sooner, Bloomberg said on Tuesday.

Attorneys are focused on suspicious activity in at least five Asian countries: China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and South Korea, Bloomberg said, adding that Uber’s law firm is reviewing financial arrangements tied to the Malaysian government that may have influenced lawmakers there.

Uber and the DoJ could not immediately be reached for comment.

Source : ( Inc is working on its first wearable device – a pair of ‘smart glasses’, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

The device, designed like a regular pair of spectacles, will allow Amazon’s digital assistant Alexa to be summoned anytime at all places, the report said, citing people familiar with the plans.

There would be a bone-conduction audio system in the device to allow the wearer to hear Alexa without inserting headphones into his or her ears, according to the report.

Amazon was not immediately available to comment on the report outside regular business hours.

Last month, Amazon and Microsoft announced a partnership to make their respective virtual assistants, Alexa and Cortana, work together. The two AI-based assistants will now be able to work with each other on a variety of devices, the companies said. Example of the fruits of the Amazon-Microsoft partnership include the ability of Alexa to be able to work with Office products, and how Cortana users could use Alexa to shop on and manage their orders. Amazon is open to the idea of opening Alexa to other competing AI assistants, though it has so far only approached Microsoft, CEO Jeff Bezos said.

Earlier this year, Alphabet re-introduced its own wearable glass headset, Google Glass, after discontinuing its production last year. The latest edition of the Glass augmented reality wearable is meant for enterprises.

Starting from $1,829 (roughly Rs. 1,16,000), the new Google Glass wearable is lighter and more comfortable to wear for long durations. It also features better battery life and more power.

Amazon sale offers will be on top of the shoppers’ minds when the Great Indian Festival starts, and to sweeten the deal, the e-commerce company will provide for the first time the option to purchase products and pay for them in instalments after three months. Named ‘Buy now, pay next year,’ the offer will be available to HDFC Bank credit card holders. The shoppers will be able to make purchases in the upcoming Amazon sale, but will be required to pay the instalments starting January 2018 only, Arun Srinivasan, category leader of consumer electronics at Amazon India told Gadgets 360. The Amazon sale starts on September 21, but Prime members will have early access to sale deals from 12pm IST on September 20 itself. To coincide with the Amazon sale, the ‘Buy now, pay next year’ offer is being rolled out on September 20 for Prime members and September 21 for everyone else.

The move comes as Amazon looks to make it more convenient for customers to purchase products from its website. This time it is putting more focus on expanding its affordability options to customers, Srinivasan said. As part of the move, Srinivasan says the company has partnered with 11 banks and Bajaj Finance service to provide a range of enticing offers including zero EMI and cash back. HDFC debit card holders will get an additional 10 percent discount on purchases, the company said.

As part of the Amazon sale, the company will be offering more than 500 offers and up to 40 percent discounts on mobiles. More than 40,000 offers will be available across the four days of the sale, with 2,500 offers on electronic items and new deals every hour. There will be over 10,000 offers on home appliances and 300,000 offers on Amazon Fashion items. The Great Indian Festival sale will end on September 24, but the company will be holding a couple of more sales in the next one month as Diwali nears, it said. “We expect this to be the biggest season in terms of sales for us,” Srinivasan said.

Diwali, the festival of light which will be celebrated across India on October 19, has been historically of great significance to Amazon India, bringing in more new customers to its service than in any other season. “During Diwali, smartphones and other electronics products see a significant jump in sales,” Srinivasan said. “Television is another such lineup that attracts many customers,” he added.

Amazon India also recently introduced a new programme called “cross category exchange” through which it is allowing customers to turn over their smartphones, for instance, when they are purchasing a new TV or a tablet, or a laptop. This programme will be valid throughout the Amazon sales held till the end of Diwali.

Asus has launched a new smartphone that is exclusive to US carrier Verizon, the ZenFone V with model name V520KL. The V here likely refers to Verizon and not the number 5, which already exists. Although the smartphone has been listed on Asus’ website, the carrier is yet to reveal pricing and availability details, but we do know that the handset will be available in Sapphire Black when it goes on sale.

As per the listing on the website, the Asus ZenFone V sports a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080×1920) AMOLED display with a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass on top and a 10-finger capacitive touch. It is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 820 SoC coupled with 4GB of RAM and runs on the company’s own ZenUI 3.0 based on Android 7.0 Nougat.

One of the talking points about the Asus ZenFone V is its primary camera which features a 23-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, laser autofocus, 4-axis OIS, EIS, and PixelMaster camera modes like low-light, portrait, and selfie panorama, among other things. Over on the front, you’ll find an 8-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

The Asus ZenFone V is offered with 32GB of inbuilt storage, which is expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB). Connectivity options on board include Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-Fi direct, GPS, A-GPS/GLONASS, 4G support, USB Type-C, and more. Sensors include accelerator, ambient light, gyroscope, and proximity sensor, among others. It is fitted with a 3000mAh battery with support for PowerDelivery 2.0 via USB-C, measures 146.5×72.6×7.6mm, and weighs 147 grams.

Since the phone is listed as Verizon-exclusive, it is unlikely we’ll see the smartphone in markets other than the US. Notably, Asus launched the ZenFone 4 Series in India last week with the ZenFone 4 Selfie and ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro, available exclusively on Flipkart.

Airtel over the weekend announced it is offering its postpaid users up to 60GB of free Internet data, if they install the company’s Airtel TV application. To cut the long story short, Airtel is offering 10GB of free data per month for six months, making it 60GB of overall free data to users who install its app. In order to claim this free data, Airtel postpaid users need to download and open the MyAirtel app, which now displays a new banner to claim free data. Users need to click on the banner and follow the instructions provided on the screen.

“The task here is to download the Airtel TV APK and install it on your smartphone. If you’re successful in doing that, then your free data will be credited to your account in just 24 hours,” the company said in its release. The company offers live television service with the Airtel TV app.

Airtel says that the new offer is similar to the Airtel Monsoon offer, which the company announced three months ago. Notably, under the Airtel Monsoon offer, the company offered 10GB free data to Airtel Postpaid customers for downloading the Airtel TV application. However, Airtel Monsoon offer was valid only for three months. The newly announced offer from Airtel, on the other hand, is valid for six months. Airtel says that it will automatically add 10GB free data every month to your postpaid account.
