Uber employees used to spy on celebrities, politicians, as well as acquaintances through the company’s tracking data, claims a new lawsuit from the company’s former staff Ward Spangenberg. This is not the first time that the ride service Uber has been accused of sharing location without the permission of the customer, and has said in the past that it will improve security. In 2014, Uber’s General Manager in New York was accused of tracking a journalist’s whereabouts through the company’s “God View” feature.

In the lawsuit, Spangenberg wrote “Uber’s lack of security regarding its customer data was resulting in Uber employees being able to track high profile politicians, celebrities, and even personal acquaintances of Uber employees, including ex-boyfriends/girlfriends, and ex-spouses.”

Reveal from The Centre for Investigative Reporting in a report claims that at least five former Uber security employees said the company “continued to allow broad access” even after assurances that it had strict policies in place to prevent customer trip data from being accessed, with “limited exceptions.”
Spangenberg in his lawsuit has also alleged that Uber routinely deleted files which it was required to keep. “Uber routinely deleted files which were subject to litigation holds, which was another practice I objected to when reporting my concerns to the company.”

Sharing his experience when working for Uber, Spangenberg added, “As part of Uber’s Incident Response Team, I would be called when governmental agencies raided Uber’s offices due to concerns regarding noncompliance with governmental regulations. In those instances, Uber would lock down the office and immediately cut all connectivity so that law enforcement could not access Uber’s information. I would then be tasked with purchasing all new equipment for the office within the day, which I did when Uber’s Montreal office was raided.”

Uber in a statement however has assured that it maintains security check of user location data. The company also acknowledged that it fired “fewer than 10” employees for “improper access” of data.

“We have hundreds of security and privacy experts working around the clock to protect our data. This includes enforcing strict policies and technical controls to limit access to user data to authorized employees solely for purposes of their job responsibilities, and all potential violations are quickly and thoroughly investigated,” Uber said in a statement.

Alongside iOS 10.2, Apple has released watchOS 3.1.1 and tvOS 10.1 updates as well. The watchOS update also brings the new Unicode 9.0 emojis just like iOS 10.2, while tvOS 10.1 update introduces Apple’s new TV app which brings various video services on one platform.

Beginning with watchOS 3.1.1, the update is compatible with all Apple Watches out there. More diverse characters, new professions, and new emojis representing sports, food, and animals have been added. New professions include scientist, teacher, pilot and firefighter. watchOS 3.1.1 also introduces the ability to change skin tones when picking specific emoji characters.

Refer to Apple’s website for detailed instructions on how to update your Apple Watch to the latest OS. In September, watchOS 3 introduced noticeable speed improvements to a platform that many had termed slow, and introduces an all-new dock with “instant access” to apps. The update also brought new watch faces, new workouts, wheelchair use, breathe mode, and more.

Apple has also released tvOS 10.1 for the fourth generation Apple TV. The big addition is the introduction of the new TV app that lets you subscribe for premium content from various video services and stream online. The update also brings Apple’s much wanted single sign-on feature which will allow Apple TV customers to authenticate all the video channels from their pay-TV providers by simply signing in once to watch all of their network-TV apps. The option is available in Settings app > Accounts for compatible select service providers. Apple looks to broaden the reach of this feature by adding more service providers over time. The latest OS sales data figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech reveals that iOS adoption has seen a boost in three months ending October, all thanks to the sales of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Japan currently holds the top spot where iOS holds the greatest share at 51.7 percent of smartphone sales, followed by 44 percent in Great Britain, and 40.5 percent in the US.

In the US, iOS share saw a 7 percent year-on-year increase, with the share being at 33.5 percent last year in the three months ending October. Calling Apple the ‘most desirable brand in the world’, the report says that this is the strongest rate of growth for the OS in more than two years, as well as the highest share seen since the three months ending January 2015 (42.8 percent).

Even though Android still holds the dominant share of sales at 57.9 percent in the US, the report says the quarter saw the fifth consecutive year-on-year decline in Android share. This strong growth rate of iOS is attributed to the popularity of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in the US market. “The lack of the headphone jack has proved to be a non-issue for US iPhone consumers, as iPhone 7 was the top selling device in the three months ending October 2016, achieving 10.6 percent of smartphone sales, despite not being available for the full three month period. iPhone 7 Plus was the 4th best-selling device at 5.3 percent, behind the iPhone 6s and Samsung Galaxy S7,” said Lauren Guenveur, Consumer Insight Director for Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

The iPhone also did well in other parts of the world. In Europe – France, Italy, Spain, and the UK saw in increase in iOS share, while Germany saw a decline in iOS share. In Great Britain, the iPhone 7 was the top selling device. iPhone 7 was the second best-selling phone in Urban China in the three months ending October 2016, capturing 3.8 percent of smartphone sales.

Now, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi has reportedly replied to a grievance mail claiming that the issue has been resolved in the latest beta of macOS Sierra 10.12.2.
