Last month, Google launched its first fully self-branded Pixel smartphones worldwide as well as in India. The unique and the distinguishing factor about these smartphones from the earlier Nexus series is that these smartphones are premium in terms of features as well as the price tag. Pixel phones have been pitched by the search giant as direct competitors to Apple’s iPhone and if latest report by research firm Counterpoint is anything to go by, Google might have a strong case in its favour.

As per the latest report by Counterpoint Research, Google’s Pixel smartphones have already captured 10 percent share of the Premium Smartphone segment in the month of October in India, since their launch the same month. However, the report says that Apple still maintains a clear lead in this segment, with around 66 percent of the overall market share, followed by Samsung with around 23 percent share.

“Google is aggressively trying to take advantage of the lack of competition in this segment and does not want to miss-out on the opportunities. The company is leaving no stones unturned with heavy spend on marketing, there are exchange and cashback offers also available for the new entrant. A refreshing and feature packed Pixel is making for a good proposition against the incumbents Apple’s new iPhone and Samsung’s [Galaxy] S7 smartphones,” Counterpoint Research said in an emailed statement.

Considering the advertisement spend by the company for its smartphones, Pixel will be able to maintain its market share if not extend it in future, the research firm said.
It is hard to judge whether the Pixel smartphones would have performed similarly if Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 debacle would not have taken place. However, it is safe to say that Google’s smartphones definitely got a performance boost due to the premium Android smartphone’s failure.

Coolpad has sent out invites for the launch of two smartphones, the Coolpad Note 3S and Coolpad Mega 3, in India. The company is set to launch the two smartphones in the country on Wednesday, and availability and pricing details will be known then.

The Coolpad Note 3S is set to be the successor of the Note 3 smartphone launched last year in October. Coolpad has also launched the Coolpad Note 3 Lite and Coolpad Note 3 Plus variants of the smartphone during the course of this year as well. The Coolpad Mega 3 will be the successor of the Coolpad Mega 2.5D (Review) launched just a few months ago in August. Both the smartphones are expected to be priced under Rs. 10,000, and given that most of Coolpad phones have been Amazon India exclusive, we expect Note 3S and Mega 3 to follow the same path.

In the sub-Rs. 10,000 range, the new Coolpad Note 3S and Coolpad Mega 3 will face competition from the likes of LeEco Le 1s Eco, Lenovo K4 Note, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, and Samsung Galaxy On7.

With these new additions, Coolpad is set to enter the crowded low-budgeted market, and it remains to be seen what the company offers to introduce tough competition. For now, both Coolpad Note 3S and Coolpad Mega 3 are expected to feature a 5.5-inch display screen, and come with dual-SIM and 4G VoLTE support.

The last smartphone released by Coolpad in India was the Note 5 smartphone with a massive 4010mAh battery and 4G VoLTE support. It is priced at Rs. 10,999 and is available exclusively on Amazon India as well. The big highlight on the Coolpad Note 5 is touted to be the Dual Space system that was first seen on the Coolpad Max. It enables users to have two accounts of WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and other apps on the same phone.

At a time when people are making serpentine queues at ATM kiosks to withdraw cash owing to demonetisation, a new report said on Monday that cyber attacks on ATMs will rise in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region in 2017.

“We have seen a big focus on ATM attacks in the APAC region, including in India. ATMs in underdeveloped countries are particularly vulnerable as those countries still have old ATM software and are running Windows XP. This makes them the perfect target for an easier score,” US-based cyber security company FireEye claimed in its “2017 Security Landscape-Asia Pacific Edition” report.

Recently, some premier Indian banks blocked debit cards that were compromised (the numbers ran into millions) in one of the financial sector’s biggest data breaches.

The State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and YES Bank were among banks which reported several of their customers’ debit cards being compromised following a malware-related security breach in an ATM network. The SBI blocked nearly 600,000 debit cards.

This came on the heels of malware attacks and cyber threats that affected countries like Japan and Bangladesh this year.
“With the continued rise in ransomware activities across the globe, religious organisations may unexpectedly become a target of cyber criminals in 2017, adding that much of the threat activity in the Asia-Pacific region is from China,” FireEye continued.

While talking about investments in security that organisations will make in 2017, FireEye predicts organisations making significant investments in the form of orchestration and automation in 2017.

“Organisations seeking to simplify everything in 2017 will set their sights on integration. A single pane of glass for all security needs will drastically improve the organisation’s security posture and show companies the true value of all the products they have acquired,” the report noted.

In general, the proliferation of cyber-physical systems and the Internet of Things (IoT) would present new opportunities for adversaries to abuse their connectivity and cause disruption at scale for a bigger payoff.

“The combination of tools such as ransomware with more formalised illicit software-as-a-service (SaaS) franchised business models will become a more attractive and lucrative option for criminals with the proper skillsets and motivations,” FireEye pointed out.

Recently, a hacker group called Cobalt targeted ATMs across Europe and remotely attacked the machines using malicious software that manipulated the systems which led the machines to automatically dispense huge amount of cash.

After petrol pumps, cash can now be withdrawn by swiping debit cards at select Ola cabs as India’s largest ride-hailing service partners with lenders like State Bank of India (SBI) and Punjab National Bank to ease cash crunch.

With banks and ATMs not being able to cope with the rush for access to lower denomination or new currency after old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes were banned, cash dispensing through swipe of debit cards at POS machines was introduced at around 3,700 petrol pumps.

The same is being replicated by Ola on a test basis in its cabs in Kolkata and Hyderabad where taxis with a bank officer and POS machine are parked at different locations and dispense cash of Rs. 2,000 per card.
Ola Chief Operating Officer Pranay Jivrajka told PTI that the initial response has been tremendous and the company was exploring with banks to expand this service to other cities with cash being dispensed on the go rather than current experiment of cars being parked at a particular busy point.

In Kolkata, Ola has partnered with Punjab National Bank (PNB), while for Hyderabad, it has collaborated with SBI and Andhra Bank.
“The week-long activity, that is already servicing thousands of citizens, will continue till end of the month. It (cabs) will visit areas like Chandni Chowk Metro Station, Esplanade Metro, Barabazaar, Salt Lake, Exide and Rashbehari (in Kolkata),” he said.
Cars carrying POS machine are servicing citizens in popular areas in Hyderabad like KBR Park, JNTU, Inorbit Mall over the weekend, he added.

“We are also looking at flagging off the programme in other key cities, including Delhi. The banks are providing on-ground executives to enable people withdraw cash seamlessly,” he said.
Following the government’s move to scrap old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes earlier this month, there have been serpentine queues at banks and ATMs as people lined up to withdraw valid currency.

There have been demands for setting up more mobile ATMs across the country and also refilling them more often as there seems to be a crunch of liquid cash given the long queues.

Ola, which has its mobile wallet service, claimed it has seen 1500 percent growth in recharge of ‘Ola Money’. “The number of trips paid in cash has certainly gone down. More people are now paying using digital platforms like Ola Money and credit/debit cards,” he said.

Uber will seek to convince Europe’s top court next week that it is a digital service, not a transport company, in a case that could determine whether app-based startups should be exempt from strict laws meant for regular companies.

The European Commission is trying to boost e-commerce, a sector where the EU lags behind Asia and the United States, to drive economic growth and create jobs.

The US taxi app, which launched in Europe five years ago, has faced fierce opposition from regular taxi companies and some local authorities, who fear it creates unfair competition because it is not bound by strict local licensing and safety rules.

Supporters however say rigid regulatory obligations protect incumbents and hinder the entry of digital startups which offer looser work arrangements to workers in the 28-country European Union looking for more flexibility, albeit without basic rights.

Uber found itself in the dock after Barcelona’s main taxi operator alleged in 2014 that it was running an illegal taxi service. The case concerns its UberPOP service which the company halted after the lawsuit.

Uber says it is a digital platform that connects willing drivers with customers and not a transport service.
The Spanish judge subsequently sought guidance from the Luxembourg-based European Union Court of Justice.
A ruling characterising Uber as a transport service could expose it to stricter rules on licensing, insurance and safety, with possible knock-on effects on other startups such as online home rental company Airbnb.

The case has drawn global interest. The Netherlands, where Uber has its European headquarters, Finland, Poland, Greece and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) have submitted written observations that tend to support Uber.

Spain, France and Ireland in their submissions however say Uber is a transport service. A grand chamber of 15 judges will hear the arguments, with more than 200 participants signed up for the hearing.

The case is Case C-434/15 Asociacion Profesional Elite Taxi.

Apple is rumoured to be working with an LG subsidiary to bring 3D photography to iPhone 8. The Korean Economic Daily, citing people familiar with matter, reports that the Cupertino-based giant is working with LG Innotek to add a dual-camera setup to the next iPhone to capture 3D imagery.

The sources claim that Apple is now “studying how to apply its 3D camera technology” into LG Innotek’s smartphone camera. “Since LG Innotek also has its own 3D camera and related technologies, such joint efforts will likely to bear fruit sometime within [the] next year,” the report cites a source close to the situation.

In its attempt to add 3D technology, the company is utilising the Israeli camera technology startup company LinX, which was acquired by Apple in April 2015. To recall, LinX expertise in allowing apps to freely use the 3D information captured by camera on the device to achieve new features such as the ability to refocus an image after it has been captured, measurement of the true dimensions of objects, 3D object modelling and real time background replacement for video calls.
The report adds that LG Innotek is already “exclusively supplying” its dual cameras for iPhone 7 Plus. The report adds that LG Innotek also has experience dealing with 3D cameras as LG launched its first 3D-enabled smartphone, LG Optimus 3D in 2011.
Considering that the all-new dual camera was seen only on the large iPhone 7 Plus, we can expect the 3D tech feature on the iPhone 8 Plus model likely to launch next year. Based on preliminary leaks, Apple is said to ditch the ‘iPhone 7s’ name for next year’s iPhone based on its naming convention and directly name it iPhone 8 considering 2017 will be its tenth anniversary of launch of the original iPhone. An earlier report suggested that Apple is also making efforts to include AR features in an upcoming iPhone camera app.
